Have you heard, brown is the new black?
Up for sale is this very cool, mostly unrestored 1978 Porsche 911SC sunroof coupe finished in its rare and original Bitter Chocolate exterior and Cork interior.
I bought this car earlier this year from a friend needing working capital to launch a new business venture. He purchased it some years ago from Vertex Auto in Miami, Florida, a well-respected dealer in pre-owned Porsche cars, replacement parts and accessories. Unfortunately other than showing up as a Florida car in the 911 registry there are scant records my friend had other than a list of modifications made by Vertex.
The chassis is rolling on 137k+ miles but not to worry, as the mechanicals show to have been thoroughly gone through with a rebuild reported within the last 5 years and 10.000 miles. In addition to installing Turbo brakes, short throw shift kit, larger Fuchs style wheels, fresh Hankook rubber and a new steering rack, the motor was warmed over with a 964 cam grind, Dansk exhaust and K and N intake filter. Updated Carrera chain tensioners, airbox pop off valve and head studs were also installed.
I have owned nine air cooled Porsches and do much of the wrenching at my own shop. I am especially familiar with these 3.0 911SC models. As such you can trust me when I say this is a very quick and strong running 3.0. It doesn't leak or smoke. The lowered stance delivers a firm ride. The car tracks straight down the road and the big Turbo brakes haul it down with authority. Handling is what you would expect from an air cooled Porsche, pretty much spot on. The Dansk exhaust gives the car a raucous idle and a mechanical growl only an air cooled flat six can produce.
The original cork interior was reupholstered and shows very well. The door panels and pockets are in great condition. The headliner is taught, original carpet in great shape. A nice set of quality coco mats add a touch of period correct class. An aftermarket Momo style steering wheel is installed. The original dash is capped but looks good and is hardly a detraction. The car also benefits from a more modern 964 AC system upgrade. The heat and defrost work as do all of the instruments, instrument lights and courtesy lights. Windows and sunroof operate as they should. Door pulls and locks in perfect working order. Being my friend is involved in the Miami music scene, he equipped the car with a killer sound system that includes a Blaupunkt head unit, and a powered sub woofer under the seat.
I had intentions to invest in the body cosmetics but instead find myself driving it as often as possible. Porsche people encourage me to leave it alone and I too have come to find its patina charming. Besides its cheaper and more fun to just be on the hunt for cool stickers worthy of the rear quarter windows.
To clarify, there is no rust on this car, there are a few paint imperfections, minor dings and chips but the car has never been hit and all panels are believed original. I have not purchased a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche but the motor is correct for the model year and I have no reason to suspect that it or the 915 5-speed gearbox is not original to the car.
Who needs a certificate from Porsche anyway? I can personally guarantee that this car is authentically cool. This car is part of the new breed of Porsche outlaws, an irreverent group of air cooled 911 enthusiasts who care more about how their car runs than looks. It will serve its new owner well, whether looking for a reliable daily driver that can be taken out in any weather condition, parked anywhere without the fear of marring a perfect paint job and taken to the track for a good thrashing. One that is known to let their dog ride along or go months without washing it and still get thumbs up from the Porsche club guys at the cars and coffee while enjoying his or her Bitter Chocolate mocha Grande.
